Relationship & Couples Therapy

Individual Relationship Based Therapy

I work with individuals who are both single (looking for love and/or recovering from breakups), and those who are in relationships and are having difficulty maintaining health and emotional safety in their relationship. Individuals having relationship difficulties may be ambivalent as to whether or not they want to stay in the relationship and therapy can be a helpful process in finding clarity.

Couples Therapy

The first stage of couples therapy is the assessment and de-escalation phase. During this stage, I learn more about the couples patterns of interaction and help to de-escalate any existing conflict. I work with the couple to determine the root of the challenges and determine where they would like to take the relationship from there. In the second stage of therapy, I work with the couple to find ways to form a stronger bond and a more secure attachment.

I generally utilize a therapeutic approach called Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT is a therapeutic approach based on the premise that emotions are key to identity. According to EFT, emotions are also a guide for individual choice and decision making. This type of therapy assumes that lacking emotional awareness or avoiding unpleasant emotions can cause harm.

EFT’s goal is to create a more secure emotional attachment between two individuals. EFT has been demonstrated as helpful for couples with a variety of problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attachment insecurity, depression, frequent arguments, a history of infidelity, and chronic health conditions.
